“Recently, my work has been a reflection of what is happening in the garden. I am particularly inspired by cosmos~ the surprise of how they’ve reseeded in early summer, the airy, sculptural quality of their growth, the longhorn bees that fall asleep inside their petals, and the way their seed heads provide food for yellow finches come Autumn. Cosmos and other flowers come to life in my ceramic work.

As a child I grew up amongst antique Chinese furniture that was passed around my large extended family. My Chinese family has a long history in Seattle’s International district selling antique furniture, flowers, and eyeglasses. When reflecting on my work recently, I realized that all of that furniture I was surrounded with had quite a bit of animism- table legs were lions legs, cabinets were carved with depictions of flowers, leaves, and birds, protective dog sculptures greeted you at the front door, there was so much life within the ordinary. I think my work now is trying to create that- an aliveness amongst everyday objects.

My studio is at a long table in a bay of windows in my dining room. It’s right in the center of the home. I work while my daughter is at preschool or at times when she is playing in the living room but, mostly she wants to squish clay next to me. I am forever inspired by mothers who are also artists- there is so much creativity, fortitude, and patience in both practices.

Outside of ceramics, I love to draw, paint, do calligraphy, garden, cook, and design landscapes, fences, and homes with my partner."
